|
Firefox is one of those programs that whenever there is something that you wish it could do, all you have to do is look a little harder because it probably does it. If your version doesn't do that particular thing then there probably is an extension that takes care or it. Or someone coded a fix in Greasemonkey. Anyway, the point is that the browser is an incredible platform and if you feel something needs work then there is usually someone who got there first. There are enough extensions and articles about extensions that most Firefox users have had some sort of pleasant experience like this.
One feature that has flown under the radar of many users, but that can be a useful tool is the keyword. Keywords are essentially shortcuts used through the location bar. They are simple enough to set up and can perform a number of useful functions.
The most convenient way to use keyboards is to access your bookmarks. If you have a lot of bookmarks, or you hide them away in folders (or in folders that are in other folders), than rather than reaching for your mouse try entering a keyboard command. All you have to do is right-click on the bookmark, enter into properties, and in the appropriate area add in a keyword of your choosing. Next time you want to go to that site just use the keyword- it is the fastest way to get where you are going.
This is the most simple way to use a keyword, but it is not the only way. Firefox also supports smart keywords based web searches. Do this you have to right click on a search field that you plan on using in the future. Choose add a keyword for this search and then the system will bookmark it. Next time you want to search through that field you simply need to enter in the keyword followed by your search terms. It is as fast and user friendly as it gets.
Keywords should not be confused with non-keyword search through Firefox's location bar. This is when after entering a string without a full address (does not end in a TLD) Firefox turns up Google's top result for what is entered. This is a default shortcut to Google's "I'm Feeling Lucky" search. It's all explained here.
Firefox has a few other ways to use keywords, but these two are by far the most useful. If you happen to visit a few sites regularly and don't want to leave them open in tabs all you need to do is set a bookmark them and assign a keyword. You can hide the bookmarks in a deep, dark corner and forget about them and just use the address bar to get where you are going.
For many people this won't be anything new, but for some users this will be a cool new trick and a way to make their favorite browser that much better. Don't forget- the use of keywords can be made a lot quicker if you know how to get there without using the mouse. The best way to do this? Ctrl+L or F6 will do the trick.
